Land that keeps dividing
Una farms coconut, mango and coastal crops on a limited strip near the sea, next to Diu. The defining constraint is arithmetic: there is only so much land, and each generation divides it again.
A holding that supported a family two generations ago now supports a quarter of one.
A problem with no local solution
This is not a farming skill issue. People here are competent. It is that competence cannot overcome an acre count, and everyone knows it.
What follows is a set of quiet decisions: who stays, who leaves, whose children get educated out of it. Those choices are made inside families without ever being discussed openly, and the resentment they generate lasts decades.
What the work addresses
Making the unspoken explicit. When a family decides implicitly that one son will inherit the land and another will leave, and nobody says it, both spend their lives interpreting a decision nobody confirmed.
Saying it out loud is uncomfortable and better than the alternative, which is two people guessing for forty years.
