Land that became a factory
Sanand went from agricultural land to one of Gujarat's automobile manufacturing centres in roughly a decade. Plants arrived, land was acquired, and a great many families received sums of money larger than anything their farming had generated in a lifetime.
That is a very particular event: not earned income, not inheritance in the usual sense, but a lump sum in exchange for the thing the family used to do.
What happens after the cheque
The pattern is consistent and rarely discussed openly. The money arrives. There is no framework for handling a sum that size, because nobody in the family has had one. Some goes on property, some on weddings, some on vehicles, some on a business nobody had experience running. Within a few years a meaningful part is gone, and the land that generated income every season is also gone.
What follows is not only financial. It is a loss of role. A farming family knows what it does at five in the morning. A family with a bank balance and no land does not.
The work
Rebuilding a definition of work and contribution that does not depend on the land, and looking honestly at money decisions made in a period nobody was equipped for. Shame is the usual obstacle, and it keeps the subject closed inside families for years.
